Descriptions:
Evening primrose is a rather humble and common plant with entirely uncommon properties. The oil made from it has been used in medicine and cosmetology for centuries for the relief of many skin reactions, gastric problems and ones connected with the function of sex hormones, but above all providing an overall good mood.
Evening primrose is the general name for plants from the Oenothera family of several dozen species. What is most valuable in evening primrose is contained in its seeds. The cold pressed oil from evening primrose contains large amounts of extremely valuable to the human body polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) — linoleic (LA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which have a broad spectrum of activity. For example, they affect the function of cellular membranes and intercellular spaces, and maintain hydration of the body.
Linoleic acid belongs to omega-6 acids that regulate physiological processes in the body as well as biochemical reactions. The human body is unable to synthesise it on its own and hence it required its regular provision. The beneficial effects of linoleic acid on the skin has been known for a long time, this is why it is often a component of cosmetics. Evening primrose oil contains as much as 70% of this unsaturated fatty acid.
In contrast, gamma-linolenic acid that also belongs to the omega-6 group, is produced in the body in the presence of a special enzyme D-6-D. This acid has a positive effect on the balance of triglycerides and lipids in the human body as well as takes part in the production of tissue hormones called prostaglandins regulating blood pressure. GLA reinforces the body’s natural defences (it is present in mother’s milk, for instance). The presence of this acid is very uncommon in plants, but evening primrose oil contains up to 9% of GLA.
Other fatty acids are also present in evening primrose oil: oleic, palmitic and stearic acid, as well as phytosterols, sulphur- and tryptophan-rich protein, zinc, selenium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin E. The abundance of these active components has made the humble evening primrose one of the most valuable plants used in supplement manufacturing. TIENS Group has also taken advantage of its benefits.
